top 5 wineries to visit during harvest

Fall Harvest is a magical time to visit wine country. The leaves are turning, the weather is stunning, and there is a buzz of activity across the Valley. Here’s my It List of the Top 5 wineries to visit during harvest:

Artesa, in the Carneros region of Napa. Go for the bubbly, the contemporary architecture, the Gordon Huether art collection, and the view of the San Francisco skyline on a clear day.

Clos Pegase, in Calistoga. The annual “Blessing of the Grapes” ceremony is a hit. The first juice of the freshly harvested grapes is “blessed” in an engaging and quirky ritual.

Flora Springs Winery in St. Helena. The Grape Stomp and Lobster Feed is a must do! You can jump into barrels barefoot and actually “stomp” on the grapes to extract juice.

Castello di Amarosa in Calistoga. Be transported to a Tuscan Castle in Italy. I love their “Festa del Uva” celebrating the grapes coming in to be pressed, complete with music and cuisine.

Round Pond Estate in Rutherford. Go for the adventure of participating in the harvest process including picking, sorting, leafing and pressing grapes. Learn about grape analysis such as measuring brix (sugar content), sampling wine in barrel, and more.
